Panel Discussion Yugoslav Heritage in the Republic of Serbia

The Museum of Yugoslavia in Belgrade, in cooperation with colleagues from other cultural institutions in Serbia, as well as young researchers from universities, is organising a panel discussion “Yugoslav Heritage in the Republic of Serbia”. The program, thus, contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the Yugoslav heritage, which at the same time encourages a better understanding of the present.

The panel discussion includes two sessions with presentations and debates on the topic of cultural centres and memorial complexes in the Republic of Serbia, being bearers of Yugoslav cultural heritage (1918-1991). Presentations and conversations with colleagues from various disciplines will open discussions about the origin, development, current condition and future of cultural centres, as well as about the significance, perception and functionality of memorial complexes.

Program of the event can be download here.

The panel discussion “Yugoslav Heritage in the Republic of Serbia” is organised within the program “Conversations about Yugoslavia” and was created as a result of field work by the Museum of Yugoslavia’s Heritage Team. Namely, the Museum is the referent institution for the social history and cultural heritage of Yugoslavia in the Republic of Serbia. In practice, this involves mapping tangible and intangible cultural assets that are of particular importance for understanding the Yugoslav idea and learning about socio-political, scientific-technological, cultural-artistic, public and private life from the period of Yugoslavia. Also, of interest are the manifestations of Yugoslavism that have been preserved even after the collapse of the state union. As of mid-2024, when the museum team began their fieldwork, the territory of Vojvodina has not yet been explored, as well as the territories of Belgrade and Novi Sad, which will be examined in the coming period.
