Promotion of the Catalogue “Protect (my) Yugoslavia”

Part of the exhibition: Protect Yugoslavia

On the occasion of the Museum of Yugoslavia Day, it is our honour to invite you to the promotion of the catalogue “Protect (my) Yugoslavia” – a publication that, for the first time, presents the complex heritage of the last years of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia through a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach.

Consistent with the Museum’s mission to present Yugoslav heritage in a critical, open and accessible manner, the catalogue offers the results of new research on the culture of memory, monuments, public and private space, political upheavals and the long-lasting consequences of the events that effected the entire region. From the assassination in Marseille and the tragic death of King Alexander I Karađorđević in 1934, through state mourning and diplomatic repercussions in Europe, to the numerous material and intangible traces of the King’s memorialisation, this publication reveals and presents in detail those layers of history that have often been silenced or completely forgotten.

The promotion brings together the authors, scholars and researchers who will discuss the importance of the catalogue from various aspects:

  1. Introductory remarks
Radovan Cukić, senior curator of the Museum of Yugoslavia, one of the authors of the catalogue
  2. “Protect (my) Yugoslavia” in a scientific and archival context
Dr. Srđan Micić, assistant professor at the Department of History, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade
  3. Challenges of musealisation of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia’s heritage
Bojana Ilić, Senior Curator of the Military Museum

Moderator: Biljana Crvenković, museum advisor at the Museum of Yugoslavia

In addition to the scholars in the humanities, the catalogue is intended for those who wish to understand the processes of creating, building and interpreting national memories, and the methods of their control, as well as their erasure. Through photographs, archives, analyses and artistic interpretations, this layered publication offers not only a scientific account of a time – but also an important call for a proactive investigation of the content and methods of our collective memory, as well as the causes of selective forgetting.

The promotion will take place on December 1, at 3 p.m., in the Cinema Hall of the “May 25” Museum.
