ARCHITECTURE OF YUGOSLAV MODERNISM, BELGRADE: 7 + 1
Part of the exhibition: Museum Laboratory
On Friday, 3rd April 2026 at 1.00 p.m., a new exhibition will be presented in the Museum of Yugoslavia as part of the the main exhibition, dedicated to the architecture of Yugoslav modernism.
The new exhibition is the result of the Museum’s cooperation with the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Belgrade and the Faculty of Applied Arts of the University of Arts in Belgrade. Students of these faculties, together with curators Marija Đorgović and Aleksandra Momčilović Jovanović, participated in the conceptualisation and realisation of the exhibition.
In an intergenerational and interdisciplinary exchange of experiences, the universal values of architecture of this period were emphasised, as well as the social role of Yugoslav architecture and the significance of its influence in shaping cultural identity.
The works have been selected based on a survey and ranking of representative examples of Yugoslav modernist architecture. The selected works represent interpretations of characteristic examples of Yugoslav modernism, and different ways of perceiving and presenting them currently are being pointed out. Various techniques and media were used in creating the works (models, drawings, graphics and other digital graphic solutions), and the exhibition is complemented by archival photographs, as well as some blueprints in digital form. A special part of the exhibition comprise models of buildings made of wooden blocks. Hence, the youngest visitors may relate to the elements of cultural heritage and identity through play, as well as become interested in its further preservation.
This exhibition is part of the Museum of Yugoslavia’s ongoing work on presenting and interpreting Yugoslav heritage, with a special focus on understanding it in a contemporary context.
In addition to the materials from the Museum of Yugoslavia, the exhibition was provided by: Belgrade City Museum, Historical Archives of Belgrade, National Library of Serbia, Foundation Milenija and Darko Marušić, Media Centre “Odbrana”, Mina Glogovac, Miloš Jurišić and Vlada Popović.
