Roundtable “Serbian National Narratives in the (Post-)Yugoslav Perspective”

How did the ways in which Serbian society imagines itself and its place within the common state and the post-Yugoslav space change during the second half of the 20th century and in the years following the breakup of Yugoslavia? These and related questions will be addressed by the participants of the roundtable “Serbian National Narratives in the (Post-)Yugoslav Perspective,” organized within the project Imagining a Nation: The Contesting Serbian National Narratives (XX–XXI centuries) (IMAGINATION), funded by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia (Prizma).

This research project, led by the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory, University of Belgrade, explores how different approaches to Serbian national identity — traditional, ethno-religious, and socialist civic — coexisted and conflicted during the Yugoslav period, striving to fit within the broader plural framework of the shared state. The roundtable will offer an opportunity to consider contemporary reflections on these narratives and the questions they raise for today’s understanding of national identity in Serbia.

Participants:
Milivoj Bešlin, Petar Žarković, Vukan Marković, and Damir Zejnulahović (Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory)
Marko Božić (Union University Faculty of Law),
moderated by Dušan Marković (Faculty of Political Sciences).
