A Different World: Panel Discussions on Self-Management

The Museum of Yugoslavia invites you to a two-day program of screenings and discussions dedicated to the legacy of Yugoslav self-management. The discussions are inspired by the documentary series A Different World, which explores socialist heritage and workers’ management models in light of today’s social and economic challenges.

Why is it important to talk about self-management today?
What did privatization mean for workers? How did large companies operate in socialist Yugoslavia, and what can we learn from that experience?

 

Day 1 – May 7 at 6 PM

Screening of the episode “Bitter Medicine”

This episode explores the end of Yugoslav self-management through the process of violent privatizations and the resistance offered by workers. A panel discussion on the deindustrialization of Serbia and the wider region will follow.

  • Jugoslav Ristić, former president of the Zastava Kragujevac labor union

Day 2 – May 8 at 6 PM

Screening of the episode “Goran, Can You Hear Me?”

This episode focuses on the final years of Yugoslav self-management and the inner workings of large-scale socialist enterprises. The panel will address the relevance of revisiting socialist work and management models today.

The Origins: The Background for Understanding the Museum of Yugoslavia
